Over the past two years, we’ve released our Menopause in the Workplace reports to understand how menopause symptoms impact women at work. Our 2022 report revealed that the vast majority of respondents did not feel adequately prepared for menopause, symptoms interfered with their work, and very few — just 8% — received significant support from their employer. In our 2023 report, 80% of respondents across the U.S. and UK cited menopause as a workplace challenge, with more than half considering making an employment change because of menopause.
This year, we’ve observed a significant shift in menopause advocacy among public figures. While this public awareness is promising, we wanted to see whether it's helping to reduce the stigma surrounding menopause in the workplace. With millennials and Gen Xers making up the vast majority of the workforce, we sought to determine whether increased discussion and support of menopause are helping these generations make better-informed decisions about their care and whether organizations are improving workplace well-being. For our 2024 report, we surveyed 2,000 working women across millennial and Gen X populations to better understand the generational differences of menopause in the workplace.
Our findings reveal that not only do 32% of millennial women report already experiencing menopause symptoms, but this generation is more informed about menopause and its potential impact on their careers when compared to Gen X women. The majority of Millennial women are having conversations about menopause with their peers and aren’t afraid to change their work arrangements in one way to mitigate the impact of menopause.
These findings present a unique opportunity for employers to proactively implement benefits that support women as they transition into perimenopause and menopause, helping to reduce the potential negative impact on their careers.
